In the Rape Culture, it is quite common to hear statements like, “they asked for it”, it was not really rape”, “they enjoyed it”, “look what they have on”.  These statements and others are used to blame the victim for what has happened to them.

The Rape Culture is defined by the Marshall University Women’s Center as an environment in which rape is prevalent and in which sexual violence against women is normalized and excused in the media and popular culture.  Rape culture is perpetuated using misogynistic language, the objectification of women’s bodies, and the glamorization of sexual violence, thereby creating a society that disregards women’s rights and safety. (Sexual Assault – Women’s Center, 2021)

Survivors in our society are alienated, therefore are less likely to come forward, share their story, or report to law enforcement or security on college campuses, for fear of being judged and further subjected to pain, humiliation, and embarrassment.  There are some cultures where women are shunned and/or punished if they are raped.

All women are affected by the Rape Culture.  Disrespect, fear, and discrimination are all norms within the Rape Culture, within our society.   Daughters are being taught to not get raped as opposed to teaching sons not to rape.
