Lady Justice is the most recognized and visible symbol in the Supreme Court building.  Justice has been portrayed as a woman dating back to the mythological Goddess Themis and Justicia.  Themis is the Greek goddess of Justice & Law.  She was known for her clear-sightedness.   Justicia is from Roman Mythology and was one of the four virtues along with Prudence, Fortitude, and Temperance.

Justice became associated with scales that represent impartiality and a sword that symbolizes power.  During the 16th century, Lady Justice was depicted as wearing a blindfold.  The blindfold is believed to indicate the tolerance of abuse of the law by the judicial system.

Adolph Weinman sculpted Justice without the blindfold.  This sculpture is located at the back of the courtroom on the west wall.  This work tells the story of Lady Justice being robbed.  It reveals the battle of good versus evil as Lady justice sits with her eyes set on the enemy and her hand on top of her sword should she need to go to battle.

I find it interesting that Justice is represented by a woman.  Justice represented by the one man considers being weaker and inferior.  Every day women are abused and discriminated against in the workplace and at home.

How is it that Justice is portrayed by a woman when justice for women is often rare?  For me, the Lady Justice without the blindfold is more representative of the women of today.  Women must work twice as hard, always be prepared for what comes our way good or bad while maintaining balance at home and work.

Women and other minorities must keep their eyes open and stay on constant watch for the enemy.  The enemy can be any gender, race, religion, or class.  The enemy I am referring to is anyone that discriminates against or abuses another human and /or uses the judicial system to impose unjustified punishment or treatment.

It is my opinion that the Judicial System protects those who created it.  It was not created for everyone.  The scales of justice are not balanced and truthfully, they never have been for those that are considered minorities.  See the source image
