Coming Out of Hiding: Reclaiming Space as a Survivor

By July 22, 2026No Comments

I want to start today by saying something that I think needs to be said before anything else:

Your hiding was not weakness. It was wisdom.

When you are living in an environment that is unsafe — whether that is a home where your truth is punished, a relationship where your needs are used against you, a community where honesty leads to consequences — your nervous system responds. It learns. It teaches you to make yourself smaller. Quieter. Less visible. Less of a target.

That is not a character flaw. That is your body doing exactly what it was designed to do.

When the Hiding Outlives the Danger

But here is what no one tells you about survival mode: it doesn’t know when the danger is over.

The nervous system that learned to make you small in the presence of a threat will keep making you small long after the threat is gone — because it never got the memo that you left. That you are in a different room now. That the people around you today are not the people who made smallness necessary.

And so many survivors walk through their days in technically safe environments while still operating the hiding strategies that kept them alive in unsafe ones. Still minimizing. Still editing. Still calculating how much of themselves is appropriate to bring into the room.

Still hiding in plain sight.

❝  The woman you have been protecting yourself from becoming is not a threat. She is a gift. And the world is waiting for her.  ❞

You Are the Light

Matthew 5:14 does not say you might become a light someday, when you have healed enough or been through enough therapy or finally feel ready. It says: “You are the light of the world.”

Present tense. Right now. In the middle of your healing. In the middle of your survival strategies and your nervous system responses and your still-figuring-it-out.

You are the light of the world.

And a lamp, Jesus continues, is not lit to be hidden under a bowl. A light is not ignited to be covered. That covering — the bowl you placed over yourself to survive — is not your permanent home.

It was a season. And seasons end.

“But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.”

— 1 Peter 2:9 (NIV)

Called out of darkness into his wonderful light. Not pushed. Not forced. Called — with an invitation that honors your timing and your agency.

Esther Waited for Her Moment

Esther understood hiding. Her Jewish identity, concealed for safety in a court that could have destroyed her. She had been managing her visibility carefully for years — not out of cowardice, but out of wisdom.

And then came Mordecai’s question: “Who knows but that you have come to your royal position for such a time as this?”

She didn’t rush forward immediately. She prepared. She asked her community to fast and pray with her. She took three days. She moved toward visibility at the pace that was right for her.

And when she stepped forward — as herself, fully, without apology — it changed everything.

Visibility Is a Choice, Not a Command

I want to be very clear: coming out of hiding is a choice. It is not a requirement for healing. It is not a test you must pass. And it does not have to be dramatic or public or all at once.

Coming out of hiding might look like telling one true thing to one safe person. It might look like setting one boundary that says: I am here, and I matter. It might look like picking up the creative work you put down because being seen felt too costly.

It might look like simply sitting at the table instead of the edge. Speaking when you have something to say. Stopping the apology for your presence.

❝ You don’t have to come all the way out of hiding today. You just have to notice the door — and let yourself stand at it for a moment.❞

2 Corinthians 4:7 says we carry treasure in jars of clay. You are not hiding because you are empty. You are hiding with something luminous inside.

And the world needs what is in you.
